Shadowboxer Tapped Out Volume 1 Cari Quinn Books
After coming off of a Jessica Jones inspired high I was looking forward to a novel teeming with female empowerment, action-packed scenes boasting of women kicking butt and taking names. Instead I got a wordy, emotionally-driven, at times unbelievably unrealistic, moody drama with the barest mention at all of female driven MMA battles. There was too much time spent outdoors in 10 (F) degree weather without any jackets to protect them from the freezing cold elements. Main characters Mia and Tray would be on the cusp of hypothermia, not in the midst of taking off their only layers of clothing to get jiggy with it. Completely implausible, especially as the author has placed this scene multiple times in the story.
The story was stagnant, there were more moments of angsty dialogue with no connection to the physical bearing of the characters. There needed to be more physicality in a book that is about the gritty, powerful and physically tolling sport of mixed martial arts. <spoiler>I was really looking forward to Mia kicking male ass in the last chapter, but she decided to back out at the last minute. I understand that the author thought this was growth for Mia, but in reality it came across for the reader as building us up really high and then finding out that it was all a dream; disappointing.<end spoiler> Tray's character was never wholly developed; there was never any sharing of his background with Mia, and the reader only catches a glimpse in the fog of Tray's history and family life. Because of this, Tray was very flat and the only thing you know about him in the present is that for some reason he loves Mia.
I understand that Mia went through a harrowing, mind-bending abduction as a child, however reading only broken allusions to the severity of her experience made the story falter and drag. Because of this, the meat of the story was never fully brought out into the light at the right time and her trauma was never addressed in a way that would benefit Mia and her support system, the other characters. This is a device authors have used throughout time to amplify the readers ‘wow’ factor. It is a dated, overused trick that hinders the story.
If you’re looking for a story with minimal scenes of actual MMA battles, with a hella lot of emotional angst, and minimal character development then this is the story for you. If you’re tired of dated plot lines that rely on keeping main characters traumatic secrets to the end chapters of the novel, than this is not the *plague for you.
**I would recommend the author Ilona Andrews for great action-packed gems filled with a female lead who is a leader and gets dirty and physical through descriptive detail and dialogue while also plunging the reader into a world that is nuanced and special.

Shadowboxer Tapped Out Volume 1 Cari Quinn Books Reviews
•••I listened to the Audible Audio Edition of this book•••
I absolutely adore the dual narration by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross! I have yet to hear a book featuring them that wasn't enhanced by their stellar performances ) They are both incredible actors who play really well off of each other. Every performance with them is an enthralling new treat! Enjoy!

This series must be listened to (or read) in order. This is the first book. I can't wait for the next one!
Fighting is just a means to an end. Mia uses it to exorcise the demons of her past and to make extra money. Soon her baby sister Carly will be out of highschool and they will make a new life far away and together. Somewhere safer. Nicer. Like where they grew up. She just needs to convince Fox to fight her. Then she will have enough money for her endgame. Another new life... But this time for both of them. Too bad women fighters are not taken seriously. How will she convince him to get into the ring with her? What if he just laughs at her?
"Fox" (Tray) is bored. With fighting. With his life. With everything. He doesn't even know what he is looking for... Until he sees Mia on the street. She intrigues him like no other person ever has. Something about her is familiar and he knows he has never met her before. He'd remember. There is no other woman like her and he has to get to know her. Why is she so enticing? What makes her impossible to ignore or forget? Will he be able to get her to give him a shot? Why does he even want one?
***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy steamy humorous chicklit romances with some horror and alot of MMA goodness along with fractured people learning to trust and a HEA )
“Sometimes the bogeyman was real. And once you knew that, you never, ever forgot.” This story was definitely, if not darker, more serious and intense than I thought it would be. Which, especially paired with the author’s fantastic writing, was absolutely perfect for this story.
Mia is a struggling young woman trying to make her way in New York, hoping to move on to a better life with her younger sister one day, hopefully soon. One of the ways she plans on doing that is to fight one of the top male underground MMA fighters on the circuit, since she knows she’s as good, if not better, than he is. Plus….she needs the money. But when she accidentally runs into Tray, the same man she plans on proposition for a fight soon, things don’t go quite as planned, be that for better or worse.
I went into this book not really knowing what to expect. I like fighting books, anything to do with MMA or otherwise, so that’s what originally attracted me to this book. But fighter books are fairly popular, and most are cheesy, with dashes of un-believability thrown in for good measure. This book, however, is not like that at all. Each character has amazing depth, and the author only feeds you small details of the characters past when she feels like it in the story, which helps space things out evenly, and realistically. The characters, primarily Mia, has a dark past that really has corrupted her view of the world, and more specifically of people in general. At one point she states “Actions showed the truth. Words were often lies. Sometimes pretty ones, but lies just the same.” That is her outlook through the majority of the book. And you root for her to finally find some sort of peace, of happiness, so badly. Some of which you hope Tray can provide.
There was so much more depth and realness in the story as a whole, and you really felt like you went through an emotional rollercoaster throughout the whole thing, simultaneously wanting to shake some sense into the characters and kiss them, all at the same time!
Overall, I really, truly enjoyed this story. I will, without a doubt, be buying the entire rest of this series as soon as I can, as I can’t wait to see more of Mia and Tray, as well as some of the supporting characters in this book. All of which had just as much personality and depth as the two main characters. I’m also super excited to check out more of this author’s work. I don’t think I’ll be disappointed, if this book was any indication.
