I originally read The Wind Eye (and all of Robert Westall's other books I could get my hands on) when I was in junior high school. While I really loved The Machine Gunners, the Wind Eye quickly became my favorite. The other day my 12-year old was asking for something interesting to read, and for some reason, I thought of this book. I had looked and looked for a used copy of this book a couple of years ago, to no avail. But I thought I'd check Amazon, and sure enough, there it was.The Wind Eye is the story of three youngsters on what would otherwise have been a boring family vacation to a dilapidated old cottage on England's Northumbrian coast. The cottage had been left to dad, Bertrand, by an eccentric old uncle who had mysteriously disappeared. The locals don't seem to fond of the outsiders moving in for their holiday, especially when young Mike discovers what appears to be an ancient Viking boat hidden among a bunch of junk in a large shed. The kids go out in the boat the first time with Bertrand, and encounter a sudden mysterious mist on an otherwise clear day. Mike quickly deduces that the boat must be a time traveller, and he sets out, without Bertrand's knowledge, to test his theory. The local lore regarding a venerated old saint, St. Cuthbert ("Cuddy" to the locals;, the mysterious old man who sings in the middle of the night, but whom only little Sally can hear or se;, and the mysterious Viking boat all converge into a gripping fantasy adventure . The Wind Eye, like all of Robert Westall's books, are ideally suited for kids between about 11-14 years of age. This one, like The Watch House and the Devil on the Road, are appropriate for boys or girls, whereas the Machine Gunners will appeal more to boys than to girls.

I read this book when I was a teen-ager, and it is one of those rare books that has stayed with me all my life. Three Children vacation with their father and stepmother in a dreary, remote part of Northumbria, and are brought up against a mystery that transports them through time. The Wind Eye, an ancient Boat they find in a shed, mysteriously transports them back to Lindesfarne Island in the 7th century to the time of St Cuthbert. There they relive history, meet the Vikings who sacked the Abby there, and ultimately meet St. Cuthbert himself. In the process they are all profoundly altered in their views of life and about themselves.
