Death Metal Epic Book One The Inverted Katabasis Volume 1 Dean Swinford Books

This book is written in the context of death metal, but anyone who is or was into some serious hipster stuff will relate to Swinford's love of his chosen fanboy obsession. From the way independent labels treat their artists to how mean fake hipsters are to true believers, it's all here.

The best reasons to buy this book are the story and the writing. It's an easy read that you'll tear through in two or three sittings; there are moments where you'll laugh your head off. Like the previous reviewer, I just hope that the author doesn't keep us waiting too long for the second book.

Death Metal Epic Book One The Inverted Katabasis Volume 1 Dean Swinford Books Reviews

I really liked all of the connections to the bands and music I grew up with in this one. Many of the opinions and desires related to music herein are ones I identify with on a daily basis. The story was good too, and also very relate-able. I am curious what lies next for David, a.k.a. Azreal. I hope that the wait is not long for the 2nd book.
Almost every subculture has a novel or author that immediately comes to mind when it's discussed. Junkies have Tony O'Neill and Jerry Stahl, folks from The Ozarks have Daniel Woodrell, and rich housewives with nothing to do can always reread Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary, to name a few. Now, finally, death metal has its own book, and it's actually a trilogy Dean Swinford's Death Metal Epic.

The first installment of Death Metal Epic is all about what its title implies death metal. The narrative is full of the music, the clichés, the art, the subculture. Swinford possesses an academic knowledge of the genre, and his writing is both a satire and an homage. The author has torn open the death metal beast and exposed to readers the inner workings of independent labels, reviewing, zines, album cover art, and small-time tours. However, the most enjoyable parts of the narrative are those in which Swinford deconstructs the genre itself. From the characteristic growling vocals and heavily distorted guitars to its sometimes Lovecraftian discourse and ennui-laden lyrics, everything that death metal is, the good, the bad, the amazing, and the ludicrous, is detailed and discussed with a mix of heart and humor that makes it hard to stop reading.

While Swinford's knowledge is a treat, what makes this a superb first book in what will hopefully end up being the definitive trilogy about death metal is its plot and main character. David is a likable guy with no luck who embarks on a tour that's doomed from the get-go. The tougher things get, the more likable he becomes. Keeping readers interested in David is great because it means that they will keep an eye out for the second installment.

Death metal lovers will find plenty in Death Metal Epic that will make them bang their head and throw their horns up. However, those that don't know or don't care about the difference between heavy metal, death metal, and deathcore will also find this a very entertaining read, and might even learn something from it.
I'm not a huge fan of death metal but I do find it one of the more interesting genres of music plus I also love books/stories revolving around bands, touring, and music so Death Metal Epic was a treat for me. This book is just as much about the pressure of growing up and progressing in life, which can be a hard thing to do when you're passionate about something. In this case it's about David being in the band, Valhalla while the rest of his bandmates have already headed off to college. Under contract, the band has to complete a second album but with no help or support David has to start all over which leads him to meet and collaborate with free spirit Juan. The two learn from each other and complete the album...which is quite a departure from Valhalla's original sound. From this, their label sends them to tour Europe which is less glamorous than it sounds. Much is learned and new people are met and a new world opens up with many possibilities of the future. This book is fun to read and I could really get into David's head and see the world through his eyes. Some of the writing was a little too serious but I also think death metal takes itself a little too seriously so that kind of goes together. This book is the first in what will be a trilogy so the story doesn't end when you read the last page, it just progresses into the next installment. You have to read the 2nd volume to see where everything is going so get ready to buy that 2nd book to continue on. I did enjoy this book a lot and am anxious to hear more of David's story.
Entertaining read for everyone, but may speak the most to those who like death metal or have known anyone trying to get into the music industry.
